Summer is still here! Are any of you planning to go away for a late summer vacation or some R&R? Packing is always a challenge — fitting everything in a tiny little suitcase! — but luckily, 2nd Street Beauty has makeup items to make that part of things a little easier! Bring these along, and you’ll have everything you need to look your best on vacation.
1. We love color-coordinated eyeshadow palettes! Instead of lugging each individual shadow with you, invest in a travel-friendly palette. It should have colors that compliment each other, and a good combination to use day and night while away. Go for colors that can be worn easily with other colors - natural earthy tones like brown, or soft pastels that highlight a sun-kissed face. At night, try something a tad more dramatic like navy blue, or something shimmery that you wouldn’t necessarily wear back home! Make sure to invest in some primer for long lasting color, like Too-Faced Shadow Insurance.
2. Cheek and Lip Stain — another wonderful road companion. The color is soft, but provides just the right amount of tint to make you look fresh. It’s incredibly versatile and long lasting, too! A favorite is the Beach Tint by BECCA. It’s waterproof, so you’ll have to use makeup remover before cleansing your face. An extra step, but waterproof makeup provides great insurance for tropical adventures and high-humidity getaways. It’s also safe to wear swimming!
3. Waterproof mascara — who wants to worry about reapplying this stuff, or wiping away smears and smudges while cavorting on the beach ot taking a nap by the pool? With waterproof mascara, just apply in the morning, and don’t think about it for the rest of the day! One of our very favorites at 2nd Street Beauty is Bare Escentuals’ Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara. And at bedtime, Klorane Wild Cornflower Eye Make-Up Remover is a perfect and soothing way to remove mascara and liner before nighttime cleansing.

Summer is here – a perfect time to note a few of our favorite warm-weather items! We’ve listed them here – in no particular order - as well as a few reasons why you should have them!
 1. Bronzer - I love my blush, but summer is all about achieving that natural-looking, sun-kissed glow that will have everyone believing you spent the day on the beach. I love using bronzer in the summer because it’s a subtle, yet shimmery, way to brighten my face! One of my favorites is Jane Iredale Quad Bronzer in Moonglow. Mineral-based with a natural, built-in sunscreen, be sure to ask an associate which shade is right for you!
 2. Bright lipstick - When I think of summer, I think of playful, bright hues. Opt for a playful pink, orange, or bold red lipstick to make a statement. Pair it with a floral outfit and you’re all set! My natural skin color is somewhat olive, so I like to wear a fuscha lip color, like Smashbox’s Photo Finish lipstick in Flirty.
3. Tousled Hair - If you’ve got stick-straight hair like me, you’ll love this product. Summer is all about having beach-sexy hair, and Alterna Caviar Beach Spray is perfect for achieving that look. Just spray through your damp hair while scrunching, and you’ll have the tousled hair you’ve always wanted. You can also try it in your roots and then blow-dry your hair while flipping it upside down for more volume. Try not to brush it too much, or you’ll lose your tousled locks!
 4. Sunscreen - While it’s tempting to run outside the second you see the sun peeking through the curtain, make sure to apply sunblock first. Protecting your skin from UV rays will not only protect you from skin cancer and sun spots, it will also keep your skin from aging. A favorite sunscreen for my face is Murad’s Perfecting Day Cream with SPF 30. For the rest of my body, I use Dermalogica Waterblock Solar Spray. It sprays on easy and won’t clog pores.
5. Nail Polish - Bold, statement nails are always in style. I was so excited to see new shades in-store from Nubar, and can’t wait to try some of their summer-perfect colors! Just like brightening your summer makeup, choose fresh summery shades! A good way to gauge what works? Use all the beautiful, summer fruits that are everywhere as a reference!

 It is that time of year again! School is almost out, light lingers later, and the smell of barbeque floats through my neighborhoodmost evenings. To celebrate the beginning of this most beloved season, I joined a friend on Tuesday night to tackle Signal Hill, home of steep inclines, glorious declines and a panoramic view of Long Beach and beyond. By the end of our first hill (we start with the steepest so everything else feels easier), I was completely out of breath and my thighs were on fire. Alas, I pushed on and forty-five minutes later was one step closer to pulling out last year’s bikinis without fainting or weeping.
What do you do to look your best and stay healthy during the summer months? Beyond rule number one - sunscreen, sunscreen & more sunscreen! - there are plenty of suncare, skincare and fair-weather products to assist you in feeling and looking beach-ready! 2nd Street Beauty has great lines to help you groom, tan and protect - the toning you’ll have to do on your own! - as well as summer accessories to show off and cover up in!
Sunscreen is so important, especially if you are fair-skinned like me. Less a blog and more a reminder – this weekend at 2nd Street Beauty is Beauty Day, our chance to celebrate you, our loyal customers! This is for all of you… those of you who have shopped with us for years, or new friends who are just discovering the delicious recipe that is 2nd Street Beauty.
We are a family business built on integrity, quality products, well-educated sales staff, and standing behind our word and our wares. You let us be expressive and creative, bring wonderful products and environments and customer service to each of our five stores, and have a lot of fun while we are doing it. I’ve become my mother. The mom I remember from being really little. I would sit in the bathroom with her as she was getting ready, and watch her with make-up and perfume, engaging in the daily rituals of becoming beautiful and presentable for the day ahead.  St. Valentine’s Day is almost here! Which means it is time to visit one of our five locations and find something fabulous for you, or the fabulous someone you adore.

Some experts believe it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”.
 Eventually February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. Historically the date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. Often there was a social gathering or a ball.

With colder temperatures and the holidays upon us, there have been wonderful, winter-y scarves and hats stacked up here in the 2nd Street Beauty office, where our buyer’s picks come to be sorted and tagged before being sent to one of the stores. We have all ooohhed and aaahhed over the great array of pocketbooks, clutches, and oversized wallets, as well as jewelry perfect for holiday gatherings: oversized cocktail rings, strands of faux pearls and delicate beads, and twinkly earrings to dress up a simple holiday dress.
Worth highlighting, and Nicole’s latest fave rave, are Alex & Ani’s gorgeous stackable bracelets. They are being featured all over the magazines (Lucky, in Touch Weekly, and Ali to name a few) and all over young celebrities - half a dozen CW Stars come to mind! The holidays are upon us and things are getting crazy out there! It’s that time of year - Black Friday is two days away, after-work traffic is getting a bit wacky as people begin to hit the malls, and holiday decorations have already shown up in stores and neighborhoods.
Here at 2nd Street Beauty the energy of the holidays is upon us, too. Consider our lovely stores a calm place to meander and shop, away from the madness of the big shopping centers and department stores! We have great promotions and events coming up, beautiful and festive products hitting the shelves, and for us an evening of company and employee appreciation is just around the corner. All that being what it joyfully is, we are remembering to keep in mind what this season is all about.

I am lucky to try amazing products at 2nd Street Beauty so I can write about them, and as much as so much here is so good, every once in a while there is that product that makes you think, How Did I Possibly Ever Live Without This? Welcome to DDF Skincare! DDF (Doctor’s Dermatologic Formula) products are silky, and smoothing, and delicately-fragranced. They penetrate, hydrate, even things out, and brighten. The DDF Lines are built to cleanse, treat, moisturize and protect, and the experience of using their products is creamy and fun and delicious. I open the jars, and bottles, and it’s a bit like dessert, for your skin! It is that wonderful.
First on the list: the Brightening Cleanser. This clear, liquid cleanser is part of DDF’s Hyperpigmentation Line, made to even out uneven skin tone and diminish brown spots. Glycolic and Salicylic acids work to exfoliate while bearberry and mulberry extracts and licorice condition and brighten. I am very fair skinned and don’t sunbathe, so I am not seeing a lot of sun or age spots on my skin (yet!), but I am addicted to this cleanser! It has a soft licorice smell, leaves a light layer of moisture after cleansing, and my skin is indeed immediately brighter and feels fresh.
After cleansing, I use a few drops of a moisturizing serum that is part of DDF’s Preventative Anti-aging line. This Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer is instantly absorbed in to the skin. Its vitamin peptide complex works to reduce pore size and minimize wrinkles over time. It has an incredibly silky feel and is perfect to smooth over the face and neck before applying moisturizer.
Okay, so, moisturizer! How does one choose?! I have sampled four of them and I love them all. The first I tried is the Ultra-Lite, Oil-Free Moisturizing Dew - it is fresh, lightweight and - as promised - moisturizes with out being oily. For my forty-four year old skin, which tends toward dry rather than oily, this is a perfect warm-weather day cream. In the winter months however, when it tends to be drier, I need something with some emollience to keep my skin hydrated and protected. So I’ve tried three of DDF’s slightly heavier moisturizers, and really, I cannot figure out which one I heart the most.
The Advanced Firming Cream smells and feels fresh, with a slight peppery quality, due to DDF’s turmeric complex, an anti-oxidant powerhouse. Copper and zinc serve to firm, tighten and replenish moisture. This is a rich cream, perfect to use before bed on your face and neck; for daytime the Advanced Moisture Defense offers the same benefits - tones, gives moisture and fights free radicals with turmeric-based antioxidants- with the added bonus of a built-in SPF15 . I love both of these moisturizers! They hydrate thoroughly without any oily residue (even after sleeping), and my skin feels soft and protected from less forgiving weather and sun.
But my fave of faves, the thing I would cling to in the lifeboat as I approached the deserted island, is DDF’s Dramatic Radiance.
